Technical Manager

Major Responsibilities:    
  • Manage the site Quality function comprised of two teams servicing multiple businesses and technologies.  In collaboration with direct reports and Corp R&D and Quality functions develop and implement strategies to improve site quality performance metrics and customer satisfaction.
  • Provide leadership, mentoring, coaching and performance management to both the Resin Quality Manager and Gelcoat Quality Manager along with their subordinates.  Ensure the organization is properly designed, staffed and managed to meet both near and long-term goals.
  • Provide leadership in managing the site ISO-9000 quality management system.
  • Collaborate with corporate Quality and R&D groups to implement systems for effective and prompt root cause analyses, and management of corrective and preventative actions.
  • Take a hands-on approach to identify and correct technical problems to improve manufacturing efficiencies in coordination with Operations staff.
  • Manage the site Process Engineering function comprised of two engineers servicing multiple businesses and technologies.  Provide mentoring, coaching and performance management to develop reports for success and career advancement.
  • Manage existing and implement new and innovative techniques and procedures for the effective processing of the various chemical technologies and unit operations at the site.
  • Provide hands-on process knowledge and expertise to solve technical challenges and improve manufacturing throughput, consistency and efficiency.
Capital Expenditures and Maintenance
  • Direct, mentor, coach, performance manage and develop the Plant Engineer for success and career advancement.
  • Complete capital projects including budgeting process, project selection, project execution from inception through close.  Use and introduce professional capital management and project management tools and practices to achieve 100% on-time, on-budget projects.
  • Assist the Plant Engineer, in overseeing the management of the Site Maintenance and Reliability management system including the development of strategies and initiatives focused reliability of key utility and processing equipment.
  • Assume a site leadership roll as the Plant Manager’s key direct report.  Drive site engagement in the support of Interplastic’s core values including, and most notably our EHS values by maintaining and enforcing all company safety, environmental and health requirements.
  • Manage assigned departmental budgets and projects.
  • Provide “hands-on” support to lead assigned projects to improve safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Travel as required to support the company goals and objectives.
Competencies Required: 
  • Sound chemical process engineering skills demonstrated through the use of calculations and modeling to understand processing parameters for design, operations and improvement.
  • Project Management expertise applied to capital expenditure management demonstrated through the successful completion of a broad range of projects varying in scope, size and complexity in a setting as the sole project engineer.
  • Practical plant operations knowledge obtained as a hands-on participant and lead in equipment maintenance, process determination and improvement, and operator training.
  • Broad and deep knowledge and understanding of equipment utilized in the chemical processing industries.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in a broad range of engineering disciplines allowing for effective design and troubleshooting of equipment systems and processes as well as communication and management of both internal and external engineering resources.
  • Knowledge and experience in plant automation including both hardware architectural options, software solutions and equipment from filed devices, MCCs, PLCs and SCADA.  The successful candidate has lead or held a key role in the execution of major plant automation implementations.
  • Capability to build/maintain excellent rapport with operations, product development, and sales and marketing teams.
Education/Training Required: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in batch chemical processing manufacturing.
  • 5+ years managing Engineering Group
  • Minimum of 5 years process engineering experience in batch chemical manufacturing.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands on capital project management executing projects ranging from $100,000 to $5,000,000 both in a team as well as autonomous environment.
  • Experienced in managing and developing Quality programs such as ISO 9000.
  • Experienced in applying continuous improvement analytical programs such as SPC/SQC, Six Sigma and Lean.
  • Working knowledge of wet chemistry analytical equipment.
  • Proficient in various software including, MiniTab, AutoCad, and all Microsoft programs.
