Description

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThis role is an integral part of the leadership team responsible for the forestry, engineering, and harvesting.  This position reports to the South Valley Area Manager. The Forest Engineering Specialist/Harvest Manager position is responsible for managing safety, environmental stewardship, quality, production, and costs on Contract Logging Operations as well as responsible for the planning and management of field engineering activities. It also requires active involvement in road construction and road maintenance activities. Coordination with all other forest management operations is paramount (i.e. road construction, forestry, and engineering). The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the Integrated Skills Development Process (ISDP). The objective of ISDP is to provide for a structured process for individual development matching business skill set needs in the areas of forestry, engineering, land use, and harvesting.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tKey Functions:
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tEmploy harvesting and engineering skills in the planning and field implementation of road layout, road construction, road maintenance, cable/ground-logging systems, and harvest unit layout.
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tEnsure compliance with state and federal wildlife, water and forest practice rules/statutes and stewardship goals.
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tFull participation in the management of expense and capital budgets.
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tNegotiating, preparing, and administering contracts.
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tAct as company representative with landowners, government agencies, and community representatives.
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tStrong advocate for safety within the team and throughout the operation.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tSafety – Lead safety meetings, perform pre-work safety inspections and needed follow-up, and actively participate in health and safety programs including near miss reporting. Demonstrate, role model, and coordinate training on safety policies and safe work practices. Apply laws and safety regulations to active operations and address safety issues appropriately (unsafe acts, PPE, etc.). Conduct incident investigations and apply critical thinking to correctly identify root cause and appropriate corrective action to prevent reoccurrence.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tEnvironment – Regulatory knowledge and application of Oregon Forest Practices and Endangered Species Acts as impacted by harvesting operations. Assess daily fire risk situation, fire equipment use and capabilities and perform fire drills/audits. Train contractors to our EMS and SFI standards and audit for conformance, correcting as necessary.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tQuality – Able to estimate volumes, piece size, and determine feasibility of harvesting specific timber types. Apply log sorts, log value, customer needs, merchandising/value extraction, scaling process and have an understanding of factors and inputs that impact log quality.
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\tProduction – Develop logging prescriptions with input from engineers. Achieve high utilization rate for systems and equipment by advanced application of various harvesting systems as applied to topography and timber type. Be able to evaluate harvest system capabilities and limitations and have advanced knowledge of skyline mechanics and payload limits. Manage felled and bucked inventory, monitor and direct daily cutting activities. Develop logging price and production plans by unit, daily and long-term tracking and evaluation of harvesting performance. Performs key role in sequencing of harvest units through maintain accurate machine delivery schedule and coordination of road construction, cutting, logging, transportation, marketing, and logging clean up.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tCost – Performs cost analysis on individual machines, classifications, and systems. Negotiate, prepare and administer logging contracts for Contract Logging Operations. Responsible for developing annual budgets and delivering results against budget.
\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

 

\n\t\t\t\t\t\tQualifications\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
    \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Associate's Degree or higher in a relevant field and/or 5 years experience in the logging industry with forest harvest unit layout and road layout/construction experience. Northwest regional logging experience is preferred. 
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Minimum 3 years leadership experience in the logging industry. 
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Must be a highly motivated, self-directed team player. 
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral) needed to effectively function as part of a team. 
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in use of personal computers and MS office products (i.e. Word, Outlook, Excel) are required. Experience with TimberRite, Geographical Information Systems, and other industry related software is highly desirable. 
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Knowledge of and ability to deal with state and federal wildlife, water and forest practice rules/statutes.  
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Prior experience preparing, negotiating, administering and monitoring contracts. 
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Experience developing, prioritizing, planning, implementing and managing activities to meet targets and deadlines. 
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Current driver’s license is required as work involves driving company vehicles (highway and logging roads; approx 25,000 miles per year). 
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Willingness to spend the majority of time in the field, much of it on steep or uneven ground covered with slash and brush. Field work is accomplished under a variety of weather conditions; all that the Northwest has to offer.  
  • \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
  • Must be willing and able to work the hours applicable to the job, which includes early mornings and occasional weekends.

  • Pass a pre-employment background check, physical and drug screen.
